Homeless Students
DeLaSalle High School is committed to supporting all students and families, including those experiencing housing instability. Under the federal McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, children and youth who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence are entitled to educational protections and support services to help ensure school success and stability.
Students identified as experiencing homelessness may be automatically eligible for certain services and programs, including free school meals, Title I educational support, transportation assistance, and other resources.
Students May Qualify for McKinney-Vento Services If They Are Living In:
- Emergency or transitional shelters
- Motels or hotels due to loss of housing or economic hardship
- Campgrounds or temporary living situations
- Shared housing ("doubled-up") with friends or relatives due to loss of housing or financial hardship
- Substandard housing or places not ordinarily used for sleeping
- Cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, or similar settings
- Situations where they have run away or have been asked to leave home
- Other temporary or unstable housing situations
Available Services
Eligible students may receive assistance with:
- Immediate enrollment, even if records are unavailable
- Obtaining school, medical, immunization, or other required records
- Transportation to and from school, when eligible
- School supplies and backpacks
- Clothing and basic needs assistance
- Referrals to community resources
- Academic support and intervention services
- Social-emotional support and school-based case management
- Connection to community agencies and housing resources

Enrollment
The McKinney-Vento Act requires the immediate enrollment of homeless children and youth. These children must be allowed to attend school even if they are unable to produce previous academic records, immunization and medical records, proofs of residency, birth certificates, or other documentation that is usually required.
Enrollment Disputes
If a dispute arises regarding school enrollment or school selection:

The child or youth will be immediately enrolled in the school where enrollment is sought while the dispute is being resolved.
- The parent, guardian, or unaccompanied youth will receive a written explanation of the school's decision, including information regarding the right to appeal.
- The parent, guardian, or unaccompanied youth will be referred to the DeLaSalle McKinney-Vento Liaison, who will assist with the dispute resolution process.
- In the case of an unaccompanied youth, the liaison will ensure immediate enrollment and access to educational services while the dispute is pending.
DeLaSalle High School will follow all state and federal requirements to resolve disputes as quickly as possible while ensuring uninterrupted access to education for students experiencing homelessness.
